I believe it is just a futile task to try to make sense out of the internal logics of Inception. It is full of inconsistencies and contradictions. Period.
Nor should anyone attempt to develop a profound philosophical notion from the deeper meaning of the story. It just wants to say that dreams and reality are hard to distinct, and they interact with each other. We simply don’t know which one is a better place to live in.
So what is left I this movie? Well, the whole idea is quite creative. By putting the characters in dreams, the director can virtually create whatever scenes he wants to shoot, without the burden of explaining how different episodes fit together. I still think that the dreams are sometimes too “real” though. There are more imaginative ways to make use of the dreams.
The acting is fine. I am glad to see Leonardo matures from a 13-year-old lesbian in Titanic (as one of my friends put it) to a real grown-up in his recent works, Blood Diamond, the Revolutionary Road and Inception. To give up the idea of looking perfectly gorgeous in every shot is the starting point to become a great actor.
Overall, even though I enjoyed myself in the cinema for 2.5 hours, I really can’t say Inception is a great movie. The basic materials are fine, but the execution still leaves room for improvement.
During this same weekend, I also watched A Single Man and Ghost Writer on VCDs. I would not hesitate to rate either of them higher than Inception. Both Colin Firth and Ewan McGregor are British, and I must say that the British can really act – I guess they begin their training since very young.
